I have sketchbooks and sketch collections dating back over 25 years. One day I’ll do an exhibition of all of my sketchwork.
My preferred sketchbook is an A4 Derwent spiral bound (I think they’re 115gsm pages?). But I have used cheaper ones, Karst stone paper ones, smaller ones, Moleskins and loose paper in a pinch. The bulk of my sketching (life drawing included) I do in ballpoint pen. Normally black, but sometimes red or blue. I prefer pen firstly as it doesn’t rub on to the opposing page but also for the forced commitment. There is a range of line weight you can wrangle with ballpoint (depending on the pen quality) but there is no erasing. So it forces a confidence and adaptability that makes mistakes into discoveries.
I’m not overly protective or precious about how the sketch turns out. And with each new one I hope to find favourite shapes or rendering techniques.
I’m largely self taught but I have attended a few concept art courses and watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials
I love drawing. Particularly from a blank page.
Where there was nothing, I can conjure worlds.
Let me know what bits you like!
